Everyone remembers a case, a scene, or a few words that made him/her want to become a surgeon. Tell us yours, as we create the master list of Surgeon Heroes.
From Dr Katie:
I worked with Drs Lucas and Ledgerwood as a 3rd year student for a month. I’ll never forget being on trauma call, getting the level 1 page, and a few minutes after the trauma arriving, seeing Dr Ledgerwood walk in through the trauma bay doors (she parked her car in the ambulance bay) and asking, “What do we have?”
She is the type of surgeon I hope to become some day.
From Angelique Aggrey, french linguist and aspiring surgeon:
Dr Aggrey nominates Surgeon Hero Dr Ben Carson:
From Dr Goldberg:
Dr Goldberg nominates surgeon hero Dr Maimonides. He was the surgeon to the royal court of Spain. He was also a philosopher. I began studying his work in some philosophy courses in college.
From Dr Mayglothling:
Tom Scalea, the director of Shock Trauma, is my mentor, friend and my hero. His dedication and passion for trauma surgery is unparalleled. If we wanted to try something new, he was always supportive. His mantra was: We don’t read the textbooks, we write them. Just try it! Training under someone like that every day is inspiring; you want to be a better doctor.
From Dr Chakrabarti:
The best part of Dr Shetty is that it he is a Daredevil at heart, never have I seen or heard from my seniors to back down of any challenge. He is truly a Rock Star.
From Dr Davis:
Dr Davis nominates surgeon hero Dr Blackstone. Her predominant philosophy, every single day, is to always do what is right for her patients. She consistently shows a level of integrity and work ethic that I have never seen before. This seems to result in her patients having consistent positive outcomes and a feeling that she truly cares about them.
From Dr Testa
Dr Testa nominates surgeon hero Dr Iannace. He is a living symbol of the Hippocratic Oath. Despite long hours spent in the hospital, whole days in OR and evening/nights in outpatient visits, he always has a smile and a word of support for all. Lengthy working hours and efforts for him are never an obstacle.
Excellent surgeon, but especially, a great man!
