Preliminary data presented at the 2011 meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons found breast cancer survivors to be satisfied long-term in choosing contralateral mastectomy for the unaffected breast.
The surveyed group were Mayo Clinic patients with unilateral cancer and family history of breast cancer. 92% of 269 respondents reported, twenty years after initial treatment, they would make the same choice again. A higher proportion reported satisfaction at twenty years than at ten.
